    Volkswagnov električni dirkalnik, ki gre po rekord na Pikes Peak

    Nemci so objavili prvi fotografiji elektrognanega športnika I.D. R Pikes Peak, ki ga konec junija pošiljajo na gorsko-hitrostno dirko v Kolorado.

    Na legendarno dirko, katere cilj je na višini 4300 metrov, po 31 letih znova pošiljajo svojo zverino. Za razliko od takratnega predelanega Golfa z več kot 600 konji, so tokrat pripravili dirkalnik z električnim pogonom, ki moč pošilja na vsa štiri kolesa.
    Podrobnih podatkov o pogonu za zdaj še ne razkrivajo, a prijavljeni so v razred Open, kjer praktično ni posebnih pravil. Udeležba na tej dirki bo hkrati pomenila tudi promocijo novi Volkswagnovi usmeritvi, ki predvideva, da bodo do leta 2025 imeli v ponudbi vsaj 30 električarjev.

    Volkswagen’s motorsport division was in the French mountain town of Alès for the reveal of the I.D. R, its latest racer and Pikes Peak record hopeful.

    Shown in naked carbon fiber, with only a scant few sponsor stickers on it, VW finally revealed that the I.D. R will make 680 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. That power will be sent to all four wheels, but thanks to its electric power supply, torque will be fed to the wheels that need it most, for active torque vectoring.

    That should help it get its 1,100 kgs (2,425 lbs) up the famous hill climb in a hurry and, indeed, gets it to 60 mph in just 2.25 seconds, faster than most current F1 and Formula E cars. That will be important if they hope to earn the electric record at Pikes Peak (8:57.1, set in 2016).

    The question of weight was an important one since VW decided that they wanted to prioritize out and outpace over everything else. To run an electric motor ragged requires a lot of power and, by extension, a lot of batteries. To keep things light, though, the I.D. R will generate about 20% of the power it uses during the race, through regenerative braking.

    As with most Pikes Peak cars, the I.D. R bears some pretty ridiculous aero elements. These aren’t just there because the sport gives engineers the freedom to do whatever they want, aerodynamically, but also because, at altitude, the air density requires more aggressive spoilers and wings.

    Since Pikes Peak is still a public road for the next little while, VW will be conducting its testing in Alès, which is at the foot of the Cevennes mountain range in France.

    After about two weeks, it will be onto Colorado, where VW will finally be able to run some tests in situ. There it will have the great advantage of having Romain Dumas, three-time Pikes Peak winner and two-time Le Mans winner, behind the wheel.

    Update: On Monday, VW and Romain Dumas ran the first tests of the I.D. R, which according to the brand, were successful. Along with a quote from Dumas (below), VW released new images of the car on track. They are included in the photo gallery above.

    “It was absolutely fantastic to see the completed I.D. R for the first time, and to take it out for its first spin,” said driver Romain Dumas. “What Volkswagen has managed to put together from scratch over the past few months has my greatest respect. I had obviously seen initial pictures of the car – but it is even more spectacular in the flesh. We now have a packed schedule of testing ahead of us, and I am looking forward to every meter!”

    This week was the Volkswagen ID R’s first as a real life and to celebrate it got to stretch its legs at a track on France’s Cevennes mountain range.

    The track is in Ales, driver Romain Dumas’ hometown and it’s where the driver trained for his previous Pikes Peak drives.

    With an aero package based heavily on Porsche’s erstwhile Le Mans racer (the French connections keep coming), the 919, VW is making the best of its empire. Dumas should also be comfortable with the package since he raced the 919 to victory in 2016.

    Pikes Peak is a particularly good place to show off an electric vehicle because the altitude (on top of requiring the massive aero elements) tends to slow down internal combustion cars near the top.

    VW faces its own problems getting to the top, though, since electric vehicles require so many batteries to run quickly. If you saw the car’s horsepower figures earlier this week (680 hp, 480 lb-ft of torque) and weren’t quite blown away, that’s as a result of VW’s need to balance the power supply against the weight of the batteries.

    Even with power that setup, it weighs in at more than 2,400 lbs, but VW had some tricks up its sleeve. Thanks to its regenerative braking system, it expects the ID R to generate roughly 20% of the energy it uses while going up the course.

    Get ready to watch it go up the hill and try for the electric record in June.

    V nedeljo se je odvijala najbolj zahtevna dirka na Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, kjer se je voznik Romain Dumas soočil z izzivom in skušal z električnim dirkalnikom Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak postaviti nov rekord proge. V kvalifikacijah je dosegel najboljši čas.

    V spodnjem videu pa nekaj utrinkov iz zadnjih priprav…

    Sledila je nedelja in dan D…

    Volkswagen je pričakovano zmagal, nepričakovano pa so postavili nov rekord na 20 kilometrski gorski cesti in s tem podrli oba prejšna rekordna časa – električnega 9:07.222 in bencinskega 8:13.878, ki ga je leta 2013 dosegel Loeb.

    Volkswagen in voznik Romain Dumas so z električnim dirkalnikom I.D. R Pikes Peak postavil nov rekord legendarne ceste.
    Hkrati pa so s časom 7:57.148 za kar 15 sekund izboljšali čas katerega je dosegal Sebastian Loeb.

    VW gre po rekord na Zeleni pekel

    Zmagovalec letošnjega Pikes Peaka, električni VW I.D. R, bo prihodnje leto rušil rekord na Nurburgringu. Zato je že tudi določen datum – maj 2019, ko bo proga zaprta za ostale dirkače in »dirkače.«

    Električni rekord je trenutno v rokah NIO EP9 s časom 6:45.900, najhitrejši vseh časov pa je Porschejev 919 Hybrid Evo, relikvija WEC dobe, s katero Porsche zdaj ruši rekorde najbolj znanih dirkališč na zemeljski obli. Porschejev čas je 5:19.55 s povprečno hitrostjo 233,79 km/h.

    Simulacije so pokazale, da bi I.D. R znal peljati pod 5:30, kar pomeni, da ima možnost postaviti ne samo električarski, pač pa tudi skupni rekord. Morajo pa dirkalnik seveda predelati, predvsem aerodinamiko, saj so pogoji na stezi nekaj povsem drugega kot steza na Pikes Peak. Za volanom bo tako kot v ZDA Romain Dumas, ki je tudi 4-kratni zmagovalec 24 ur Nurburgringa.
